Ingredients

  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1-2 teaspoons granulated sugar optional
  • 1 cup heavy cream for whipped cream
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar for whipped cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract for whipped cream

Method

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Gather all your ingredients: vanilla ice cream, milk, vanilla extract (and optional sweetener), and heavy cream for the topping (if making homemade whipped cream). If you plan to make homemade whipped cream, ensure your heavy cream is very cold. Chill your mixing bowl and whisk attachment for a few minutes in the freezer beforehand. For an extra frosty shake, pop your serving glasses into the freezer for about 10-15 minutes before blending.
  2. Combine Milkshake Ingredients: Carefully scoop the vanilla ice cream into your blender. Pour in the milk. Add the vanilla extract. If you're using an optional sweetener, add it now too.
  3. Blend Until Smooth: Secure the lid on your blender. Start blending on a low speed and gradually increase to medium-high. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, about 30-60 seconds. If your milkshake is too thick, add a tiny splash more milk and blend again. If it's too thin, add another small scoop of ice cream and blend.
  4. Taste and Adjust: Open the blender and taste. Adjust the vanilla or sweetness as necessary and blend again to incorporate.
  5. Prepare the Whipped Cream (if homemade): In your chilled mixing bowl, pour the very cold heavy cream. Add a tablespoon of powdered sugar and a tiny splash of vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, then continue to beat until firm peaks form.
  6. Pour and Top: Pour the freshly blended vanilla milkshake into your chilled serving glasses. Generously top each milkshake with your homemade whipped cream or store-bought whipped cream.
  7. Garnish (Optional) and Serve Immediately: Optionally, add sprinkles, a maraschino cherry, or a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce. Serve your creamy vanilla milkshake immediately with a wide straw and a spoon for the topping.

Notes

Ingredient Swap: I often use half-and-half instead of whole milk when I want an even creamier, more decadent shake, it's a simple upgrade that makes a noticeable difference.
Storage Tip: This milkshake is truly best enjoyed immediately, but if you must store it, I've found that pouring it into an airtight container and freezing it for up to an hour can work.
Just give it a vigorous stir before serving to recombine.
Make-
Ahead Trick: You can scoop the ice cream and measure the milk into the blender carafe ahead of time and keep it in the freezer.
When you're ready, just pop the carafe on the base and blend.
It chills everything perfectly and speeds up the process.
Common Mistake: The biggest error I see is using warm ingredients.
If your ice cream is too soft or your milk isn't cold, you'll end up with a thin, soupy shake.
I always make sure my ice cream is firm and my dairy is straight from the fridge.
Serving Suggestion: For a fun twist, I love to rim the glasses.
Dip the chilled glass rims in a little corn syrup or honey, then into colored sprinkles or crushed vanilla wafers before pouring.
It feels so special.
Equipment Note: If you don't have a powerful blender, a standard one works fine.
I just start on the lowest setting and use the tamper to help move things around before increasing the speed to avoid straining the motor.
