  • 1 3/4 cups (420 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons (7.5 ml) baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons (7.5 ml) baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water
  • 1 cup (240 ml) semi-sweet chocolate chips optional

Method
 

  1. Follow these steps to prepare the easy chocolate cake.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. Whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large mixing bowl until well blended.
  4. Add the eggs to the dry mixture and mix briefly.
  5. Pour in the milk and vegetable oil, mix until combined, and then blend in the vanilla extract.
  6. Carefully stir in the boiling water, noting that the batter will be thin.
  7. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using, until they are evenly distributed.
  8. Distribute the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool the cakes in the pans for 15 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. Frost the cooled cakes with your favorite chocolate frosting or whipped cream.
